Murray Darling Basin in the spotlight- lunch with Environment Minister Sussan Ley

Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley will address the challenges facing farmers, communities and the environment throughout the Murray Darling Basin at a special Rural Press Club of Victoria lunch in Melbourne in October. After a career in the sky and on the land, Ms Ley was elected to the southern NSW seat of Farrer in 2001. The long-time country MP’s current role as Environment Minister, and former portfolio positions in health, aged care, regional development, education and agriculture, allow her a broad and unique perspective on the issues facing rural Australia.

The Rural Press Club of Victoria gives young journalists and students access to some of the state’s leading reporters, editors and photographers. The Club’s Young Journalist Forum is a signature event, with speakers addressing the forum's theme of 'cutting through'. Whether it be getting that first job, covering a court round, holding politicians to account or getting started with an investigative piece. Our panel of guest speakers include ABC senior journalist Ben Knight, The Age and SMH National Affairs Editor Rob Harris, Herald Sun education editor Ashley Argoon, AAP journalist Karen Sweeney, Wimmera Mail-Times Editor Jessica Grimble, The Age investigative journalist Tammy Mills and freelance photographer Brendan McCarthy. The event is free for our Rural Press Club of Victoria members, and tickets are $15 for non-members.

Join National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) President Fiona Simson for a Rural Press Club of Victoria lunch on 31 July.
Fiona will speak about what the NFF wants to achieve under a returned Coalition Government and the NFF’s vision for agriculture to be a $100 billion agricultural industry by 2030.
Passionate about the power of a unified voice for agriculture, Fiona also believes in its role in a strong and vibrant future for regional Australia.
Fiona is a farmer from the Liverpool Plains in NSW where she, husband Ed and family run a mixed farming enterprise including broadacre farming and breeding commercial Poll Hereford cattle.
In 2016, she became the first female President of the NFF, after being the first woman to lead the NSW Farmers’ Association.

Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and Rural and Regional Australia Joel Fitzgibbon will outline his vision for the sector at a Rural Press Club of Victoria pre-federal election lunch in Melbourne this month. Mr Fitzgibbon, who has been MP for the NSW regional seat of Hunter since 1996, served as Agriculture Minister during the second Rudd Ministry in 2013 and has been Labor’s agriculture spokesman for thepast six years.

New Victorian Agriculture Minister Jaclyn Symes will address a Rural Press Club of Victoria lunch in Melbourne in April. Premier Daniel Andrews appointed Ms Symes as Agriculture, Regional Development and Resources Minister following Labor’s re-election in November last year. Born and raised at Benalla, in the North East, she has been a member of the Victorian Legislative Council since 2014. Ms Symes will talk about her vision for her ministries ahead of the April 30 state budget. The lunch will be held at CQ Functions, 113 Queen St, Melbourne on Wednesday, April 17 at noon. We have moved this Rural Press Club networking event to Horsham in western Victoria, home to our national grains genebank. It’s crucial to unlocking more resilient and profitable crop varieties and like the system of genebanks around the world, acts as a Noah’s Ark for crop diversity. Come down after work on Friday to hear from international and Australian specialists from a local farm, the national genebank through to the international system that fund and holds it all together.
